Jean is sleepwalking through her life until she answers a dead man’s cell phone. It turns out to be a wake-up call that sends her on a date with the dead man’s brother, a drinking binge with his wife, and a mysterious rendezvous with his mistress. Not to mention trips to the afterlife and the black market. In this quirky modern adventure, Jean reconnects to her own spirit and learns that life is for the living.
Sarah Ruhl gained widespread recognition for her play The Clean House, which won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2004 and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005. She also won the 2006 MacArthur Fellowship for “creating vivid and adventurous theatrical works that poignantly juxtapose the mundane aspects of daily life with mythic themes of love and war.” Other plays include Eurydice and Passion Play.
Auditions will be held
- Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15 from 1:00 – 4:00pm

Audition will consist of (Spaced out in 10 min intervals):
- 1.5 minute dark comedic monologue (preferably that shows off various accents)
Performances will be held at StageCoach Theatre in Ashburn, VA on weekends from October 16 – November 7, 2021.
Character Descriptions:
Jean (F) LEAD 30-40: Quirky, lonely, but caring person. She sits in a room trying to be as small as possible, but her character arc is tremendous and requires a skilled actor to execute the many levels. By the end, she will find love.
Gordon (M) LEAD Pre-Cast
Hermia (F) SUPPORTING Pre-Cast
The Other Woman / Stranger (F) SUPPORTING 25-45: Gordon’s mistress / international contact in South African airport- must be able to be both elegant (The Other Woman) AND mysterious (The Stranger) and be able to play each character differently.
Dwight (M) SUPPORTING 30+: Gordon’s brother who works at a stationary store and is totally enamored of interesting card stock. Awkward, but kind. Tries to stand up to his mother regularly. Becomes Jean’s love interest
Mrs. Gottlieb (F) SUPPORTING 60+ (or able to play older): the family matriarch. She is controlling of her sons and feels no woman is good enough for them.
